With
two teachers and five profoundly handicapped children, Aurora was
established in 1978. Aurora Special Care Centre is a centre serving
the specific needs of profoundly handicapped children. Aurora is
the only Centre of this kind the Eastern Cape.
Despite
continous campaigning over many years, the Centre is not subsidized
by the Government. Thanks to our volunteers and the community of
Port Elizabeth including local businesses we were able to raise
funds to expand into the Centre that we are today. Our first home
was a borrowed building and as we grew, our fundraising enabled
us to acquire our first premises in Newton Park, Port Elizabeth.
With careful financial planning we built and equipped our Residential
and Stimulation Centre that was officially opened in 1995. Today
we are home to almost 90 children of all races between the ages
of 13 months to 60 years old.
